Stephen Buckley was born in Leicester in 1944 and studied Fine Art at Kings College, Durham University, under Richard Hamilton (1962-67). He has taught at Canterbury College of Art, Chelsea School of Art, The Royal College of Art and he was also Artist in Residence at Kings College, Cambridge, between 1972 and 1974. He was appointed Professor of Fine Art at the University of Reading in 1994, and later Professor Emeritus in 2009. Stephen Buckley has held over fifty solo exhibitions worldwide, many more group exhibitions, and is represented in many national collections.

Artists who have influenced Stephen include Schwitters, Picabia and Duchamp. He prefers to work on a large, ambitious scale, from the 20 foot La Manche, to a great number of series over a period of years.

Stephen Buckley’s work is held in major international galleries, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Miami Art Museum, Miami, Florida, USA, National Art Gallery of Wales, Cardiff, National Art Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Tate Britain, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
