Alan Davie, CBE, one of Scotland's major artists, was born in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1920. Alan studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1937-40 and afterwards served in the Royal Artillery until 1946

Following the war, Alan travelled throughout Europe and exhibited in Italy where he drew the attention of Peggy Guggenheim. IIn 1956 Davie had his first solo show in the US at the Catherine Viviano Gallery, New York, and at this time he also met several Abstract Expressionists, including Jackson Pollock, who proved a major influence. International exhibitions and prizes followed. He is also a proficient and passionate musician.

Alan's paintings have been exhibited at Tate London, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Edinburgh, MOMA New York, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Peggy Guggenheim Foundation Venice and Auckland City Art Gallery. Meanwhile books featuring his work include "Alan Davie -The Quest for the Miraculous" by Michael Tucker and "Art in Progress:Alan Davie" by Michael Horowitz.
